What is the CER?

The CER is the Commission for Energy Regulation. We have responsibility for regulating natural gas and electricity in Ireland. Please see our About Us section for more information on the role of the CER.

Can I change my gas supplier?

The Gas Market has been fully open to competition since 1 July 2007.All gas customers can now change supplier. A list of CER licensed gas shippers and suppliers is available here

What is the difference between Bord Gáis Networks and Bord Gáis Energy

They are separate and distinct business units within Bord Gáis Éireann and are ring-fenced through their respective licences issued by the CER.

Bord Gáis Energy is a gas supplier and supplies gas to its customers. It has no connection with the activities of Bord Gáis Networks (BGN).

Bord Gáis Networks is the regulated System Owner. GaslinkIndependent System Operator is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the transmission and distribution networks and developing commercial arrangements for use of the natural gas network in the Republic of Ireland. Gaslink contracts BGN to carry out a numbe rof the above functions on its behalf. This contractual basis is set out in the Operating Agreement between BGN and Gaslink.

How do I claim Free Gas or Electricity Allowance?

If you are in receipt of a pension or state benefit you may also qualify for a Free Gas or Electricity Allowance from the Department of Social and Family Affairs. If you are not already in receipt of this please contact the Free Schemes Section on 1890 50 00 00 extension 48371. This allowance can be obtained for either gas or electricity, but not for both, so it is advisable to assess which would be more beneficial to you before choosing one.

I have a problem with my bill?

If you are experiencing difficulties with any aspect of your bill you should contact your supplier first to rectify the situation. Please see the CER's Consumer Website www.energycustomers.ie for further information

I have complained to my supplier but no one is dealing with my problem.

If your complaint is unresolved and you have been through your supplier or network operator’s full complaints handling process you may refer your complaint to the CER for investigation. Please see the CER's Consumer Website www.energycustomers.ie for further information
