Licences

Gas

In the gas retail sector there are two distinct activities – that of a shipper and that of a supplier. An individual or organisation can be licensed to supply or ship gas or both.

A gas shipper is responsible for liaising with Bord Gáis Networks to ensure that gas is delivered to individual homes and premises. They act like a middle person between the Bord Gáis Networks and the supplier. The supplier processes the sale of gas to individual customers.

At this time there is one combined licence for shipping and supply of gas. An individual or organisation can choose to apply for both aspects of the licence or just one aspect depending on how they fulfil the application criteria.

The Commission has the power to licence shippers and suppliers under the Gas (Interim) (Regulation) Act 2002.

Application Process and Requirements
Applications for a shipper or supply licence are made directly to the CER.
Supporting Documents and Procedures
Prospective natural gas shippers must fulfil a number of industry requirements.
